I love the Patchwork Wheel block, and I think it is so fun to play around with the layout and color arrangement of the blocks. For this quilt, I thought it would be fun to emphasize the quadrants of the wheel, while keeping the wheel intact. These bright colors remind me of the swim rings I see at the pool, where we have been spending a good part of our summer, thus the name Inner Tube! Using large blocks, this small throw size quilt comes together very quickly and makes a perfect picnic quilt!

If you are using yardage, you will need to cut 5” strips from your bright solids and subcut into 42 5” squares.

unnamed-22

From your background solid, cut 6 9.5” strips, then sub cut into 9.5” squares. You will need 21 9.5" squares.

Take 21 5” squares of each color and set aside for the four patches.

With the remaining 21 5” squares of each color, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each square.

unnamed-2

Place a bright square on a background square, with the corners matching, and the diagonal line running across the corner of the white square.

unnamed-3

Sew on the diagonal line.

unnamed-4 unnamed-5

Trim the corner 1/4” away from the seam line and press.

unnamed-6

Repeat with the three other bright squares on the three corners of the block.

NOTE: to reproduce the color layout of this quilt, sew the green and blue onto opposite corners, and the pink and coral onto opposite corners.

unnamed-10

Now you will make the four-patches. Sew the pink square to the green square, and the blue square to the coral square as shown in the picture, then sew your two rows together. You will need 21 four-patches. It is important that the colors are on opposite corners, as in the square in a square blocks.

Now you will lay out the rows. There are two rows, as shown in the pictures. The direction of the four patches and square in a square blocks will rotate between the different rows.

ROW B

You will have four A rows, and three B rows, alternating.

After you lay out the blocks into rows, you will sew the blocks into rows. Press your seams, and then sew the rows together. Press well.

Baste, quilt and bind as desired
