At the Seashore - Sunset Over the Pacific
Welcome to the Pacific Coast! I am fortunate to live just a few miles from the coast in Southern California and after a long hot day, my family and I often pack a picnic and head to the beach for a few hours of rest and relaxation. We arrive just as the tourists are packing up, and nestle down in our beach chairs, shooing off the seagulls and watching the dolphins or seals swim in the water.
Our local beach is Point Dume in Malibu. It's quiet (for a Southern California beach!) and has the most perfect spot to sit and watch the sun set just beyond the point into the Pacific Ocean. Its truly breathtaking!
This post is part of our summer quilt-along series. Find the rest of the posts by clicking {here}.
Today's block is a play on the traditional Ocean Waves Block, but with a twist, rearranging some of the half square triangles and adding in a few extra colors so you can have your own Sunset Over the Pacific!
FABRIC A: (8) 4” squares background
FABRIC B: (6) 4” squares assorted blues/greens (representing the waves)
FABRIC C: (2) 4” squares gold (representing the sun)
Step 1: Make Half Square Triangles.
Draw a diagonal line on the back of each gold or blue/green square. With right sides together, layer one gold or blue/green on top of a background square and sew ¼” on each side of marked lines. Cut along the diagonal line. Press seams open to reduce bulk and trim squares to 3.5” square.
Step 2: Assemble half square triangle blocks into rows as shown. Press seams open.
Row 1:
Row 2:
Row 3:
Row 4:
Step 3: Combine rows together to form block.
This block finishes at 12" x 12".
I hope you enjoyed making this Sunset Over the Pacific Block and I can't wait to see everyone's At the Seashore quilts. If you make a block, be sure to tag me on Instagram (@thefeltedpear) or on Facebook in the Moda Bake Shop Bakers Group!
