It’s our favorite day of the week – Blockheads Wednesday! Our featured designer this week is Debbie Maddy of Tiori Designs. Debbie is known for her beautiful shibori-inspired fabric collections that feel at once both timeless and modern. If you haven’t seen Debbie’s Instagram Reels of her unfurling her hand-dyed shibori fabric, you definitely need to check them out!

Something new we’re doing for this round of Blockheads is a weekly video. You can follow along with me as I sew the block of the week and share my tips and tricks and talk about different construction techniques. I’ll post the videos on YouTube and share them here on the blog. You can watch this week’s video below:
In this week’s video, I’ll break down the no-waste flying geese construction and show how I use seam tape on my sewing machine plate to avoid having to mark stitching and cutting lines on my fabric when making flying geese and HSTs.
Looking for seam tape? Try Cluck Cluck Sew’s Diagonal Seam Tape or Tacony’s Hemline Seam Guide Tape.
I’ll also show you exactly how to trim down our slightly oversized flying geese and quarter-square triangles using a basic ruler.
This 4 1/2” ruler from UltraGrid is my go-to everyday ruler!
Once again, my Easy Press Pen and Fabric Treatment helped me get flat seams where I had a lot of bulk.
For those of you who prefer to make your flying geese using the stitch-and-flip method, here are the fabric cutting instructions.
For 6” finished blocks:
B: (4) 2” x 3 1/2” rectangles
C: (8) 2” squares
For 12” finished blocks:
B: (4) 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangles
C: (8) 3 1/2” squares
Are you ready to see our blocks?
Alison is making a fall version in 12” blocks and a patriotic version in 6” blocks.
Lissa is using Nantucket Summer for her blocks.
And I am making a traditional/repro scrappy fall version and a sweet/cottage-y Americana version in 6” blocks. I couldn't decide whether to use red or blue fabrics for my Americana block, so I ended up making one of each!
Now…off you go to press, cut, and sew! And don’t forget to share your blocks with us in our Facebook group or on Instagram (#modablockheads5)!
